Jacob Broom built a cotton mill at this site in 1795. The mill burned down in 1797, and in 1802 he sold the site, complete with a working dam and millrace to X, who paid $6,740 for the 95 acres.X founded his eponymous company at this site, and started by reworking damaged gunpowder and refining saltpetre. Soon they started manufacturing gunpowder and as much as half of the powder used by the Union Army during the American Civil War was supplied by them.Identify.

X is E.I du Pont who started the Eleutherian Mills at this site and founded the E.I du Pont de Nemours and Company to manufacture gunpowder.
